Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site

The Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Collin County, Illinois is the site of a pre-Columbian Native American city directly across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri. This historic site is also known as Cahokia Mounds State Park and is managed by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. The park contains 2,200 acres (8.9 km2) of land, including twelve mounds (ten are earthen pyramids) that were built by the Mississippian culture. The largest of these is Monks Mound, which covers some 14 acres (5.7 ha) and rises to a height of 100 feet (30 m).

History

The city of Cahokia was first settled around 600 CE. It began as a small village on the west bank of the Mississippi River, but soon grew into a large and prosperous city. By 1200 CE, Cahokia was the largest city in North America, with a population of 20,000 people. The city was a major center of trade and politics, and was home to many different cultures.
