The Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Collin County, Illinois is the site of a pre-Columbian Native American city directly across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri. This historic site is also known as Cahokia Mounds State Park and is managed by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. The park contains 2,200 acres (8.9 km2) of land, including twelve mounds (ten are earthen pyramids) that were built by the Mississippian culture. The largest of these is Monks Mound, which covers some 14 acres (5.7 ha) and rises to a height of 100 feet (30 m).

History
