St Louis MO

The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, is a 630-foot (192 m) monument built in the form of an inverted, weighted catenary arch. It stands on the west bank of the Mississippi River at its confluence with the Missouri River, on the border of Illinois and Missouri.

History

The Gateway Arch was built as a part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, and is the centerpiece of the park. The ground for the monument was broken on February 12, 1963, and construction began shortly after. The project cost $13 million at the time (equivalent to about $111 million in 2019), which was raised through private donations and bonds.

The arch was designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen in 1947, with input from civil engineer Hannskarl Bandel. It is the tallest accessible building in Missouri, and features an observation deck at the top that is reached via tram.

Attractions

In addition to the Gateway Arch, the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial includes several other attractions, most notably the Museum of Westward Expansion and the Old Courthouse. The grounds of the memorial are also home to numerous sculptures and fountains, as well as a nature trail.

Amenities

The Gateway Arch Visitor Center is located underneath the monument, and includes a museum about its construction as well as an orientation film. There is also a gift shop and cafe.
